Importance of CRS for Canadian Immigration
Last Updated: June 11, 2022

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is used by Canada to rank skilled worker candidates who seek to come to Canada through Express Entry Program. The CRS assigns a score to candidates based on factors such as their age, education, language abilities, and job experience.
Â
Three programs come under Express Entry:
Â
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
- Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)
- Federal Skilled Trades (FST)
- Â
A qualified immigration attorney can assist you in determining your CRS score.
Â
Why is CRS Used?
Â
Canada Express Entry is the quickest path to permanent residency in Canada for talented immigrants. Every year, millions of skilled immigrants submit their profiles. Unfortunately, not everyone can be invited to apply for permanent residency, thus CRS is used to screen out the most qualified people. It is used by Canada to select competent worker applicants who have the highest probability of succeeding in its employment market. The CRS is advantageous to both Canada and immigrants. Canada does its share to welcome immigrants who are most likely to have satisfying careers in the nation by adopting this rigorous and evidence-based approach to rating and ranking immigrants.
Â
More data demonstrates that the CRS is the best model for Express Entry in Canada. In 2020, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) published a report on how Express Entry immigrants have fared in the Canadian labor market since the program’s inception in 2015. The analysis discovered that Express Entry immigrants relish high earnings, high rates of employment, and low rates of unemployment in Canada due to the way the CRS is constructed.
Â
How Are CRS Points Calculated?
Â
The maximum amount of CRS points an applicant can have is 1200. CRS points are assigned to applicants depending on their abilities, experience, education, adaptability, and other factors.
Â
Core/human capital elements + spouse factor + skill transferability factors + other points = CRS points
Â
Core/Human Capital Factors:
Â
If you are immigrating with a spouse, you can obtain up to 460 points from human capital elements, however without a partner, you can get up to 500 points.
Â
These Are The Factors (Assuming A Spouse):
Â
Up to 100 points for age
Up to 140 points for education
Proficiency in an official language – up to 128 points
Up to 22 points for second language proficiency
Work experience in Canada – up to 70 points
Â
Spouse Factors:
Â
You can gain an extra 40 points if you immigrate accompanied your spouse or common-law partner.
Education of spouse – up to 10 points
Language proficiency of spouse – 20 points
Work experience in Canada with spouse – 10 points
Â
Skills Transferability Factors:
Â
This part assesses your eligibility based on your abilities and qualifications. There are 100 points available.
Â
Language proficiency plus post-secondary education – up to 50 points
Â
Work experience in Canada plus post-secondary education – up to 50 points
Â
Additional Points:
Â
There are ways to get more points. Unfortunately, each applicant’s bonus points are restricted to 600.
Â
15 points for having a sibling in Canada
French language proficiency – 50 points
30 points for post-secondary education in Canada
Employment in Canada arranged – 200 points
600 points for provincial nomination
Â
How Many CRS Points Are Needed To Obtain An ITA?
Â
To get an ITA from an Express Entry draw, you must have CRS points equal to or more than the draw’s CRS cut-off points.
Â
The CRS cut-off fluctuates from draw to draw, based on the number of Express Entry candidates with CRS points and the number of competent applicants needed at the moment. That is, if more workers are needed and/or applicants’ CRS points are typically low, the CRS cut-off will be low.
Â
CRS points required for an ITA in recent Express Entry draws ranged from an all-time low of 75 to 462 for the CEC program.
Â
What is A Good CRS Score For Canada Express Entry?
Â
A score of 450 to 500 is considered good. An Invitation to Apply (ITA) can be expected for a primary candidate with a CRS score between 400 and 450. You must earn more options if your CRS score is less than 400.
Â
What is The Lowest CRS Cut-Off Score That Has Ever Been Recorded?
Â
The lowest CRS cut-off score ever recorded was 75. This resulted from the February 13, 2021 draw, which saw 27,332 CEC candidates get ITAs. The previous lowest CRS cut-off point was 199 points, which occurred from the May 16, 2017 draw.
Â
These draws, however, should be regarded as an exception. A CRS point range of 0–300 is unlikely to be sufficient for an ITA anytime soon.
Â
How Can A Candidate Improve Their CRS Express Entry Score?
Â
An applicant should consider entering the Express Entry pool as the first step toward gaining Canadian permanent residency.
Â
Typically, invites are extended to candidates who are currently working in Canada or who have extremely high credentials (under the age of 30, a master’s degree, and proficiency in English and/or French).
Â
Candidates from outside Canada who do not have a high profile might apply and seek to enhance their qualifications.
Â
Profiles remain valid for a year. Borderline applicants may be wasting an opportunity by entering the pool and merely waiting for an ITA.
Â
There are several ways to improve a candidate’s score while they are in the Express Entry pool:
Â
Acquire A Provincial Nomination
Â
A provincial nomination, worth 600 points, is a wonderful method for a contender to rise to the top of the pool. This path will most likely benefit the best-organised contenders. Different provinces have different priority occupations, which keeps on changing. Candidates must have their applications updated and ready to submit. They must also keep up with current events. When categories open or close, several provinces do nothing more than update their websites. Being aware of when certain categories open might be the difference between 600 points and an ITA and another six months of waiting. Candidates that have already visited a province can earn bonus points.
Â
Get A Job Offer
Â
Securing a job offer and earning up to 200 points enhances your chances of getting an ITA significantly. The easiest method to do this is to perform a thorough job search.
Â
There are several more possibilities, such as upgrading your education.
